Intersect

There is something both straightforward and mysterious in the creation of any artwork. I have been intrigued by this for years and often look for ways to utilize both conscious and unconscious ways of working. This series directly explores the intersection of chance and purpose. Actions such as scribbling or pouring paint are largely dictated by randomness and chance, while the precision of drawing is conscious and planned. These drawings start with a random application of ink or paint and then various types of drawing are layered over top. Sometimes the original random marks dictate what I draw while other times the drawings cut across the earlier marks creating unexpected interruptions and new directions in the composition. Some of the drawings are purely nonrepresentational while others hint at unfamiliar landscapes or intricate biological studies.
