Praxis

Praxis: Practice, as distinguished from theory

In 2019 I started a practice of daily drawing that lasted for a year and a half.  This was the first time I had focused most of my creative energy on drawing and as since it was a relatively new medium for me, I tried to quiet the productivity voice in my head that tells me I have to always be working towards a finished artwork. Instead, I wanted to approach the activity in a spirit of play and exploration so as not to limit myself to any preconceived ideas about the medium or my abilities. Some of my favorite drawings from that year and a half make up this series. I chose the title Praxis because it points to the fact that drawing, like every artistic endeavor, takes practice, time spent with the pen in hand and paper on the table.  Theory has its place, but for me, the physical materials and time spent in play and exploration are the heart of my life as an artist.
