Biology of the Strange

Electroforming uses a chemical bath and electrical current to deposit metal onto the surface of an existing form. Ever since using my first electroformer in grad school I have been fascinated by the way it allows me to create organically textured metal surfaces. Around the same time, I discovered the prints of Ernst Haeckel, a German naturalist who created stunning images of forms found in nature. This ongoing jewelry series is the result of my fascination with both electroforming and the natural world. Unlike Haeckel’s prints, these the pieces don’t document real world forms, rather, they are an abstract celebration of the overarching beauty and strangeness of the natural world.
